APPLICATION

We welcome and encourage applications from students from all backgrounds. This page guides you through the application process now.

STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR COURSE

Choosing the right course is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, so think carefully about what you want from your studies. You’ll need to think about:

  • which subjects you enjoy and are interested in
  • how long you want to study for
  • what type of study options you are looking for
  • what grades you might obtain
  • your future career options.
We offer an exciting range of courses that offer alternative routes and flexible study options, including:
  • joint honours (two main subjects)
  • part-time
  • extended degrees with a foundation year that offer an alternative route if you don’t have the formal qualifications for immediate entry onto an undergraduate degree
  • integrated Masters where you undertake a fourth year and convert your undergraduate degree to a postgraduate one.

STEP 2: CHECK THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS UK APPLICANTS

  • Read our entry requirements page to find out our general requirements and qualifications we accept.
    Use Course Search to check the specific entry requirements for your course as the minimum grade requirements can vary depending on the course.
    View the equivalent qualifications we accept from UK and Republic of Ireland applicants. Many courses accept a range of qualifications, not just A-levels.
    Check if you are eligible for one of our contextual admissions schemes, if you are a UK student from a background that is less represented at university. It could offer you the chance to study a degree with lower entry requirements than listed on our course pages.
    Look at our Taught Admissions Policy 2023-24 if you would like more detailed information about the admissions process.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Visit the International entry requirements page for information including the qualifications we accept and English language requirements.

MATURE STUDENTS

Mature students
If you’re aged 21 or over when you begin your studies you’re classed as a mature student. We welcome applications from mature students from all backgrounds onto both full-time and part-time programmes.

Your life and work experience mean there are alternative entry routes available other than formal qualifications, including a foundation course, a validated access course and the Access to Higher Education Diploma.

For specific entry criteria, please search for your course.

PART-TIME COURSES

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

This information is for applicants from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. If you are applying from another country/region/region, please read our information on accepted international qualifications.

Minimum Entry Requirements:

The typical minimum entry requirement for all of our undergraduate degree programs is passing in a combination of five subjects at the GCSE (or IGCSE) and GCE A (or International A Level) exams, or equivalent qualifications. It must include:

At least a grade A* to C/9-4 in English at GCSE or equivalent

Grade A*-E in three A levels.

We use the following grading scale for GCSE:

a * = 8 or 9
a = 7
b = 5 or 6
c = 4
You can find out which equivalent qualifications we accept in the following sections.

Entry requirements for your chosen course:

The exact entry requirements for your chosen course will generally be more specific than the university’s minimum requirements and will tell you which scores you need. You can find course entry requirements in the course search.

Age and stage policy:

We normally expect applicants to have completed three A-levels (or equivalent) at one sitting. If you haven’t, we will need your school or college to tell us why.

Equivalent Qualifications:

The following list tells you more about our policies regarding acceptance of qualifications equivalent to GCSE and A-levels. If your qualification is not listed here, you should contact our Admissions Team, details of which you can find on your course page.

International applicants should check our information on accepted international qualifications.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU APPLY

What happens after application

This explains what you can expect after you place your order.

Receive a decision on your application:

You can keep up to date with the progress of your application through the registration department or our agents around the world.

We will notify you when we have made a decision on your application. If you receive an offer, you can inform us of your decision to accept or decline it.

How long does it take to receive a decision:

We usually receive a large number of applications to our courses. We aim to make decisions on applications submitted as soon as possible.

For some fields, the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, to ensure that we treat all applications fairly and equitably.

Why we have put some orders on hold:

For some areas, including business, computing, law, media and communications, we may put your application on hold before a final decision is made. We do this to ensure we don’t make too many offers for your course, this means that all applications received are guaranteed to be considered equally.

It also helps us to ensure that we get the planned number of students for your course, giving you the high quality student experience you have come to expect from IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON.
